We’re sure that by this point in your graphic design career (and a lifetime spent on the internet) you’ve heard of all kinds of memes: “Pepe the Frog”, “I Can Haz Cheezburger”, “Distracted Boyfriend,” the entries in the meme archive could go on and on.

And as funny as these are, if you’re a graphic designer, you probably remember one graphic design meme in particular.

You can see it below.

Graphic Design is My Passion? Catch Me Up, Please

The "graphic design is my passion meme" depicting a cartoon frog on a cloudy background.

It’s old news by now, but if you’ve never heard of the “graphic design is my passion” meme, allow us to explain.

This amusing and ironic meme of a green cartoon frog on a cloudy background was first posted by Tumblr user Yungterra in July 2014 and the post gained over 352,000 notes during the following year. After that, it continued to gain popularity as other users began to share it on various social media platforms, often with their own unique spin (like this cat on an eye-punishing rainbow background) and intentionally bad designs paired with it.

We get it. It’s funny.

The idea of papyrus typeface and word art being used in the same sentence as the phrase “graphic design is my passion” is good for a laugh.

But even though that original graphic design meme was meant for amusement, there are plenty of folks for whom “graphic design is my passion” is much more than a funny meme on Instagram or Tumblr.

Why Designers Love What They Do

Many visual artists love graphic design and choose to make a career out of it for a variety of reasons.

Here are just a few:

Creativity and Expression

The graphic design community is made up of creative folks and they love what they do because designing gives them an outlet for their creativity.

Graphic designers often express themselves through the visual elements of their work, experimenting with different colors, shapes, and layouts to translate often abstract ideas into beautiful and impactful visuals.

Though they often work with their client’s constraints and wishes in mind, it still gives them plenty of room to showcase their unique perspective and individual flair.

Freedom

Designers also appreciate the freedom that their craft allows them.

If given free rein by a client who isn’t sure what they want, a graphic designer can roll up their sleeves, push the limits, and explore diverse styles and techniques. Unlike more rigid professions, graphic designing allows the liberty to innovate, adapt, take risks, and constantly push boundaries!

Problem-Solving

Designers work on projects that can often have significant and head-scratching challenges.

Perhaps a client’s direction is very abstract. Or a client might set certain limits that make it difficult to produce the kind of work a designer is accustomed to doing.

Not a problem.

Most graphic designers love a challenge! The problem-solving aspect of design involves understanding a client’s needs and the message they want to communicate, and designers are eager to deliver results that showcase their passion for their craft and deliver on every level.

Impactful Work

Creating work that just nails what a client is looking for, exceeds their expectations, and performs amazingly is incredibly satisfying!

It allows designers to contribute meaningfully to projects, influence audience perception of a brand, and make an impact on the success of a marketing campaign.

Seeing Their Ideas Brought to Life

It’s also quite an experience to see an idea brought to life; from an abstract concept thrown out during a brainstorming session to a detailed and visually pleasing final result.

Many designers take pride in seeing their work displayed on websites, social media sites, billboards, and across a variety of other marketing collateral.

It validates their skill and … well, it just feels good!

Looking for a Place to Learn and Develop Your Passion?

Two lightbulbs. Is a career in graphic design a good idea for you?

So was our very own CEO and founder, Shahrouz Varshabi!

His journey began with a passion for graphic design too, one that fueled all of his goals and set his future!

From the outset, Shahrouz’s goal was clear — to earn a living with graphic design and change the game in how marketing projects were completed! Shahrouz worked hard toward his dream, earning a degree in graphic design in Iran and driving taxis to both support himself and learn as much as he could from the entrepreneurs that he often chauffeured around!

In 2012, he moved to New York City to further his design education and, by 2015, had established DesignedIn (Designity’s original name!) to offer freelance design projects for students to gain experience and build their online portfolios.

Fast forward to 2023 and Designity’s unique, ground-breaking model and talent pool made up of the top 3% of US-based creative talent has revolutionized creative collaboration and design, attracting big-name clients like Marriott Hotels, Calendly, FSC, and many more.

And Shahrouz and Designity’s story is still going strong, with the promise of more innovation, creativity, and success to come!

Ready to Find Your Place?

So, if you’re looking for a place where you can make a living doing what you love best, a place to grow as a graphic designer, and a place where you have access to design experts to ask all your questions and learn as much as you can about your craft, then we have a suggestion.

Why not join the Designity community?

If you're a diehard freelancer who’s on the fence about joining a team, then here are some of the reasons why working at Designity is a great gig for any designer.

Set Your Own Schedule

At Designity, you’re free to work the hours you want.

Early bird? Great, knock out your projects while the rest of your household sleeps.

Night owl? See above.

Being able to determine your schedule greatly improves your work-life balance and gives you time for family, friends, and activities you love to do!

Do What You Love Without the Extras

The hardest part of being a freelancer is often everything but the designing.

You have to constantly market your services to get enough clients to be able to feed yourself and pay your rent. You have to chase clients down for payments, discuss their projects and budget in detail, and constantly anticipate their needs.

As a Designity Creative, that’s not the case.

Experienced Creative Directors will handle all client communication for you, acting as the middleman between them and the creative team, leaving you to do what you love without having to worry about the extras.

100% Remote Workplace

Did we mention that Designity is 100% remote?

It is. Which means that, as long as you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection, you can do what you love to do from wherever you choose.

Travel, visit friends, hang out at your favorite coffee shop, and save on gas because a remote environment means that you’re no longer chained to a desk and are free to work from wherever you want!

Competitive Pay

Setting a price on your work can often be a difficult task. Set it too low and you’ll find yourself extremely busy but eating ketchup packets for dinner. Too high, however, and clients will look for something cheaper.

We get it.

That’s why, at Designity, Creatives earn a competitive rate based on their skill level and enjoy consistent work and a reliable income! The more projects you take on, the more you earn, with plenty of opportunities for growth, promotions, and even more earnings!

A Variety of Cool Projects

As a Creative at Designity, you’ll also get to flex your design muscles and tackle a variety of projects from a variety of different companies.

Are NFTs your game? Web design? Digital ads? Product packaging?

We do it all and as a member of the Designity community, so will you!

Enjoy learning new skills, beefing up your online portfolio, and becoming a multi-faceted designer that everyone wants on their team!
