The life of a creative is an exciting one; there’s different clients, new projects, and fresh challenges that make our days so interesting.

But with all that excitement comes the less glamorous side of it all— tedious work like researching, managing and organizing files, filling out forms, keeping up with admin work.

But what if you could hand off those repetitive tasks and focus more on the parts of your job that you enjoy?

Guess, you can. That’s where Operator AI comes into play.

It’s the newest AI agent from OpenAI that’s designed to handle routine tasks, streamline your workflow, and act as your virtual AI assistant to save you time and free up mental space for your most creative ideas.

Whether you’re a designer, copywriter, or digital marketing strategist, this is a tool that could have the potential to transform the way you work.

What is Operator AI?

If this is the first you’re hearing of it, Operator AI is a program from research lab OpenAI — the same company that brought you ChatGPT, DALL-E 3, and Sora.

It’s an advanced tool (or agent) designed to perform tasks on the internet the same way that a human would. Its AI can “see” websites, understand layouts, click buttons, fill out forms, and even complete online tasks like submitting a project, answering an email, or booking a flight, all based on your simple written prompts.

How Operator AI is Changing the Game for Creatives

For creatives, it promises to be much more than just a cool tech gadget, it’s a complete game-changer.

Operator AI can free up your day by handling all of the tedious, repetitive tasks that eat away at your productivity.

Need to gather references for a mood board? Done.

Fill out some submission forms for a design contest? Done.

Sort and manage assets from multiple platforms. Done, friend.

It integrates OpenAI’s GPT-4o (the latest, paid version of ChatGPT) with visual reasoning capabilities, meaning that it doesn’t just read and respond, it navigates, interprets, and acts on your behalf, even in the background as you focus on something else.

Check out this video to get a better idea of how it can work for you:

See what we mean?

Here are some other ideas of how you can integrate Operator AI into your existing workflow to free up your time and boost your productivity!

Inspiration When You Need it Most

A set of hands with a lightbulb surrounded by gears, for inspiration when you need it most, a helpful way to use Operator AI.

Sometimes your creative juices are flowing.

Other times, the flow slows to a trickle and you need a little spark to get going again. This is where Operator AI can help, acting as a creative sidekick to help you gather up the inspo you need.

Just type a prompt like, “Find current trends in mobile app design,” or “Give me some unique marketing campaign ideas for a small business,” and let Operator do the heavy lifting for you.

Its ability to navigate the web can save you time and effort to keep you more productive than ever.

Online Resource

Looking for a specific type of resource online but don’t have the time to sit and go through search result after search result?

While Operator AI isn’t a search engine itself, it can navigate certain websites and help you find what you need.

If you’re looking for free stock images, for example, you can prompt it with something like, “Go to Unsplash and find stock photos of teams in a meeting.”

Operator can then open the site, browse the content, and take to where you need, helping you cut down the time you spend hunting down resources.

Content Research

An open laptop displaying a search engine, for content research, a helpful way to use Operator AI.

Research is an essential first step when creating great content, no matter what kind of creative work you do.

But sifting through sources and finding reliable information can be a time-consuming job. So, why not let Operator help?

Operator is capable of navigating publicly accessible websites (sites that don’t require log in, subscriptions, or paywalls), summarizing content, and even extracting key information to help you streamline your research process.

Just ask it something like, “Go to HubSpot’s blog and find three recent articles on content marketing/ design trends.”

Instead of having to manually click through pages, Operator can pull the relevant content from the site you ask it to visit and provide you with key takeaways to help you focus more on creating and less on research.

Assisting with Repetitive Tasks

Every creative has those small, repetitive tasks that eat up time in their day.

Stuff like filling out forms or writing follow-up emails. But with Operator AI, you can automate some of these mundane tasks and get more time back in your day.

Need to fill out a client feedback form? Try a prompt like, “Navigate to [your form URL] and fill out the required fields with the following information.”

Or …

“Write a professional follow-up email for a potential client, thanking them for their time and expressing interest in working together in the future.”

Then all you have to do is review and submit!

Free Up Time in Your Day

Between work, errands, and other daily responsibilities, small tasks can add up and eat away at your time.

But if you’re looking to free up more time in your day, Operator AI can help by automating everyday tasks like grocery shopping and booking tables, giving you more time for your creative work.

Need to stock up on groceries while wrapping up a project? Don’t wait till later, get it done before you forget! Try a prompt like, “Add eggs, milk, and spinach to my Instacart cart.”

Need to schedule a team lunch? Type in, Use OpenTable to start a reservation for four at an Italian restaurant nearby for Friday at 7 PM.”

Since Operator integrates with platforms like Instacart, OpenTable, and Uber, it can handle time-consuming tasks in the background while you work. While you still have to review your information and submit yourself, it can save you a lot of time to keep you productive without any distractions!

Sweet. When Can I Get Operator AI?

A calendar. When can I get Operator AI?

As of this blog’s publishing (March 2025), Open AI’s Operative is available to ChatGPT Pro users in the United States only.

If you’re a Pro subscriber, you can access a research preview of Operator by visiting this link.

OpenAI plans to expand access to other paid users and even integrate Operator directly into ChatGPT in the future. As of this date, however, they have not made an official announcement as to when that can be expected to happen.

If you’re based in the US and would like to subscribe to ChatGPT Pro to give Operator a try, just follow these easy steps:

  • Log In or Sign Up — Visit ChatGPT and log in to your OpenAI account. If you don’t have an account, create one to get started.
  • Access Settings — Click on your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select "Settings" from the menu.
  • Upgrade to Pro — Look for the "Upgrade to Pro" or "ChatGPT Plus" option in the settings menu and click it to start the subscription process.
  • Choose a Payment Plan — Select the Pro plan, which costs $20/month, to gain access to GPT-4 and additional features.
  • Enter Payment Information — Provide your payment details and confirm the subscription. You’ll be billed monthly with no hidden fees.
  • Verify Access — Once subscribed, confirm that "ChatGPT Plus" or "Pro" appears on your account, granting access to GPT-4 and exclusive features like Operator AI (if available in your region).

Are There Any Limitations with Operator AI?

Well, yes.

Like any new tech on the verge of launch, there are still some limitations with Operator AI.

Here are a few:

  • Limited Availability — Currently, Operator AI is only available to ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S., and access is still in the research preview phase. This restricts its use to a specific subset of users.
  • High Subscription Cost — Access to Operator AI requires a ChatGPT Pro subscription, which costs $20 per month. While this includes GPT-4 and other features, the cost may not be feasible for everyone.
  • User Confirmation for Sensitive Tasks — For high-stakes actions like entering payment details, Operator requires user confirmation to ensure security. While this safeguard is valuable, it can slow down workflows in some cases.
  • Dependence on Website Design — Operator AI relies on its ability to "see" and interpret website layouts. If a website uses unconventional or overly complex designs, Operator may struggle to navigate or perform tasks effectively.
  • Error Potential with Ambiguity — While Operator AI is advanced, it can still misinterpret instructions or contexts, particularly when dealing with unclear prompts or poorly structured web elements.
  • Still in Development — As a research preview, Operator AI is not yet a fully polished product. It may have occasional bugs, incomplete features, or performance limitations as OpenAI continues to refine it.
  • Risk of Misuse — Like any advanced tool, Operator AI could be exploited for malicious purposes, such as interacting with harmful websites or being manipulated by prompt injections. OpenAI has safeguards in place, but risks remain.
  • No Guaranteed Timeline for Expansion — OpenAI has not announced a specific date for a broader rollout, so its accessibility beyond the U.S. and Pro users remains uncertain.

Developers are continuing to refine Operator to improve its functionality, address any potential bugs, and improve its ability to perform complex tasks accurately and efficiently.

It might take a while, but these ongoing updates are aimed at making Operator a more reliable and user-friendly tool for creatives and others in the future.
